FAQ
March 20th, 2010 Update: Yeah I don't think I am gonna really update anything here… It is what it is and if you want to see more, keep clicking. Otherwise, see ya chumpette.
July 4th, 2008 Update: OK, it has GOT to be time to comb through this thing and see what the score is. The original content is still shown below but the new (and slightly improved) FAQ is here!
Q: What is this?
A: It's a website, what does it look like? I setup a PC with some software and now it sends you web pages when you look at it with a browser.
Q: What software do you use?
A: I have a P4 machine with around a Gig of RAM that has Ubuntu Linux on it. Some Linux junkies think Ubuntu sucks, frankly I think they are as narrowminded as the people who think Windows sucks. These operating systems all have their place. I put Apache and PHP and MySQL and Wordpress and some other crap on this Ubuntu box and now it is what you see here. There's a little more to it but this is just the short story.
Q: What happened to your radio station?
A: Too many assholes, not enough time.
Q: Do you still use ICQ?
A: Sure! Don't you?
NOTE: I just cut and pasted most of this crap. Some of this is no longer true and I'll probably get around to changing the content here to reflect reality someday soon.
General:
Q: What is this?
A: This is the website that is kind of a "front-end" to all the crap I make accessible to the world. There's more here than just a website, and you can enjoy it for free. If you want to listen to my radio station or download some old software then fill your boots, otherwise… see ya.
Q: What software do you use?
A: I used to have a bunch of machines on an internal network and everything here was scattered across these machines. Today I have one PIII 700 machine that runs almost all of it.

Q: Your downloads suck.
A: That is not a question. If there's some software that you have trouble finding, you know, that stuff that Company X doesn't make or support anymore, or if there is an older version you need to get your hands on, let me know and I'll see if I have it.
Radio Station:
Q: What's an internet radio station?
A: I setup a crapload of tunes on my computer and it plays all the time. If you want to hear what's playing you can listen in with a program like WinAMP or XMMS. I never tried any other programs so if you know of one that works let me know and I'll mention it here.
Q: Oh my, isn't it wrong to share the music you are listening to?
A: Do you think I'm getting fucking rich off this? Don't be foolish. Is it wrong for me to listen to my CD player loud enough that the people next door can hear it? Maybe, but not for copyright reasons. Watch this for fun.
Q: But I downloaded WinAMP and it sucks.
A: It sure does, if you got version 3 or 5. Uninstall that crap and try THIS version.
Q: I listened to your tunes and they really suck.
A: Try either THIS link or THIS link to fix your problem.
Q: This is so cool, can I run a radio station?
A: The short answer is Yes. The long answer is that you can do it for free (sort of) if you have a reasonable Internet connection and some software from Shoutcast. Or if you have a slow connection you could use a company like Live365 to do the server work for you (but they are not free).
Q: But what about that song requester you have?
A: You can request up to 5 songs at a time here, they will play right after the current song ends (unless there are already other requests queued). You can get the song requester program from Oddsock.
Q: Where the hell would I get that many MP3's to run a radio station?
A: Try some CD ripping software or get a news reader and check out alt.binaries.* (this may take you a little while). I personally would suggest CDex and Agent Newsreader but what the hell do I know?
Q: Why would this "newsreader" thing take so long?
A: One of the first things to evolve on the Internet was this newsgroups or usegroups thing. Basically, it is like email but instead of being private the messages are posted in a sort of public forum (or group). Most Internet providers have a news server of some kind and carry anywhere from just a few groups to thousands. Someone had the bright idea that if you attach files to these messages it is a really cool way to make files available to everyone and to do it at the expense of the people running the news servers instead of themselves. So alt.binaries.* is where you'll find these kinds of attachments. The reason it will probably take a long time is because newsgroups is typically something most people have never heard of, if you plan to use it, you'll have to learn how first.
Q: I'm trying to run my own station but I can't get it working.
A: That is not a question, but I bet you can find help in the Shoutcast Forums.
Q: Can you put Song X, Album Y or Artist Z on the radio station?
A: Go ahead and ask, that's how Obsess Ultra got on the station, but if I don't like the tunes I won't add them.
Blogs:
Q: What's this Ottawa Hurricanes crap?
A: It's my baseball team, you probably don't care (unless you are one of about 14 people in the world).
Q: What about xxxxxxxxx.com, xxxx.ca, xxxxx.dyndns.org and all that other crap?
A: I host some websites for friends and I have a few side projects that keep me from getting bored. Anything you don't like you are certainly free to not look at.
Q: How can I get ahold of you in the middle of the night?
A: email me at snork_nospam_asaurus@hotmail.com or use MSN Messenger with that address or ICQ at 3030280 (which I am using more frequently these days).
