Radio Station
March 20th, 2010 Update:
You know I would really like to find a way to start up the radio thing again. I'd like to broadcast it with one of those nifty little FM transmitters but I dunno if it'll be strong enough to work around the house/yard. Sure would be cool if I could figure out how though. Maybe I'll look into alternate ways to stream it too, cause frankly Shoutcast was kind of sloppy… though it sure is better than any Microshaft streaming solution.
July 4th, 2008 Update:
Yeah, the radio station is gone. I used to leave a machine running WinAMP all the time with all my songs queued up with Shoutcast to broadcast it to whoever wanted to listen to whatever I had on. Then I added a cute little song requester that let me select which songs I wanted to hear next. This was really cool, so I could setup a 6 hour run of HHGTTG or something and relax with a beer.
One problem that always seemed to loom was this concept that the "people who own shit police" would come and get me for sharing my music with others. I was always tought as a child to share with others. Then when I became an adult and had to pay for shit I was told that I should no longer share my shit with others. Is it stealing if I go to the music store and rip a CD then share it via torrent to the whole world? Maybe. Is it stealing if I instead take my new CD and play it really loud at the beach for everyone to hear? Fuck no! What if I stay at the beach forever and keep playing it? What if I bring ALL of my CD's and keep playing them for everyone at the beach? Nobody would have to pay for CD's anymore, they could just come to the beach and listen to mine! Obviously this is an exaggeration but the point is that the line has to be drawn somewhere. Right now, that line is drawn by the people who make money off the musician's labour. Are they looking out for YOUR interests or THIERS?
Aside from all the "who owns what" bullshit I also just don't have time to fuck with that stuff anymore. I may have time again in the future, or there may be no future. I don't know.
Unknown Date:
Currently I am in the process of switching from one web server to another (which is part of the reason for the new layout and WordPress and all). The radio station still lives on the old web server right now but you should be able to LISTEN TO IT HERE using WinAMP or XMMS. The song requester is not available but it's setup for random play so you'll get more good tunes an hour than you will listening to a real crappy radio station. :)
Update Aug 11, 2006:
You can access the old song requester HERE but the navigation links at the left are screwed up once you get there.
Update Nov 3, 2006:
All of the radio station stuff has been moved to the new PC and should even have the song requester working (on a different port). Had a drive go boobs up on me but I think I'll be OK.
